Are there any employment supports for those with Asperger Syndrome?

Some supports may be available for helping with employment.  There are a variety of services for people with disabilities which may include: employment counselling and preparation, career assessment, resume preparation, interview skills, job search, job shadows, work experience and job support.  Some agencies that work in this field include:

  • Manitoba Family Services and Housing Vocational Rehabilitation Program – (204) 945-1335 http://www.gov.mb.ca/fs/pwd/voc_rehab.html – This is a voluntary program that is available to those with disabilities or other barriers to employment.  Individuals will be matched with a regional case worker who will interview them regarding potential job training and placements.  The Vocational Rehabilitation worker may then refer them for additional employment support through any of a number of supported employment agencies throughout Manitoba.

I am employing someone with Asperger Syndrome, how can I learn more?

AMI stages annual conferences in Winnipeg that highlight the latest developments in research and understanding of people who have AS.  We are also able to provide educational presentations to schools and work places.  You can contact AMI for additional information about these opportunities or in answer to a specific question.

Does AMI offer any services to adults who have an Asperger Syndrome diagnosis?

AMI has developed the Asperger Manitoba Resource Centre (AMRC) which provides social skills/skills for living groups for adults and children with AS.  There is an intake process and groups are run in collaboration with the Department of Psychology at the University of Manitoba.  Groups take place at the Society for Manitobans with Disability Clearinghouse offices at 825 Sherbrook Street.  More information about the AMRC can be found on the AMI website under the heading of AMRC or contact our organization.
